Sailplane Pilot Licence (SPL) (SPL)

SPL (Sailplane Pilot Licence) is the glider pilot licence under EASA. It entitles you to fly gliders. Training includes launches (aerotow, winch, etc.) depending on ratings.

Prerequisites

  • Age: min. 16 (parental consent if underage)
  • Medical: fitness for glider flying (heart, vision, balance checks)

How to obtain

Theory: approx. 100 h (e-learning, lectures); state exam. Practice: min. 15 h (10 h with instructor, 2 h supervised solo, 45 launches and landings, navigation flight min. 50 km). Often approx. 14 days in a row.

Approximate cost

Cost depends on aero club and number of launches. Usually lower than PPL(A). Aero club and ATO offers.
